What is branding? People think and often say it is your logo. That is one component of your brand but there is a bit more to it.
“Your brand is a story unfolding across all customer touch points.”
When you hear branding in the context of Design or Marketing you automatically think ahhh it’s the logo.
Yes, that is one part of branding but there is a bit more to it.
How I would describe branding to someone who has no Design or Marketing knowledge? If branding were a person it would simply be, what makes them unique.
- It’s their personality
- You get a sense of their beliefs and values through their mannerisms and the way they talk to you.
- How do they make you feel?
- Help solve your problems
The visual representation of your brand is your logo which is based on the above information.
You don’t have to be Apple or Starbucks to invest in your brand. That is quite the opposite. As a small business or start-up brand, this is the best time to invest in your brand as you are working with a blank slate. You can definitely invest in branding and in my opinion should be at the top of your to-do list.
I am not saying you need to spend thousands but it is important to get this foundation right. I get it as a small business or indie brand you have to be careful with your budget outgoings.
If you have your branding sorted early on, people tend to do business with businesses they are familiar and trust.
You may think the above process is a bit excessive to get to a logo but it is important to get this foundation nailed and most importantly be happy with your brand direction.
I have put together a free Branding Prompt Worksheet for you to download. Do take the time to fill out this worksheet. All these responses can be shared to a designer which can help them out in understanding your brand and in term design a brand look and feel based on these questions.
